Acquired Brain Injury
Goal: The goal is to develop and establish skills in Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and Person-Centred Planning to work with individuals who have Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and their support systems. The aim is to reduce challenging behaviour and increase the quality of life of the individual. By doing so, the individual will be able to increase their own independence and have meaningful relationships with family, friends, and the community.
Purpose: In my professional experience, I have worked with adults who have ABI. I have observed that, while other developmental disabilities receive specialized behavioural support to address challenging behaviour, there is limited behavioural support for individuals with ABI within BC. My objective is to change this by gaining competence in this area.
How this impacts my practice: Equipped with the necessary skills, I will be able to train, support, and empower individuals with Acquired Brain Injuries, families, and caregivers in implementing PBS to reduce challenging behaviour and increase the quality of life. This will lead to a better quality of life and meaningful relationships with family, friends, and the community.
Artifacts
1. EPSE 577 PBS Plan
The PBS plan was created for a man with an Acquired Brain Injury with the goal of facilitating community partispiation. A student-led Functional Assessment Interview was used to inform the PBS plan. This PBS plan incorporated his own goal of reducing challenging behaviour and volunteering or gaining employment in the community.
2. EPSE 512 Presentation on ABI Recommendations for Special Education
I created a presentation for Special Educators where I reviewed and shared the results from the article Intensive Positive Behavior Supports for Adolescents with Acquired Brain Injury: Long-Term Outcomes in Community Settings (my Annotated Refrence article) by Gardner et al (2003). I summarized the information from the article and shared IEP reccomendations for supporting this population within a special education setting.
3. EPSE 575 - Review of Tramatic Brian Injury
I created this disability review of Tramatic Brain Injury for EPSE 575. It includes reccomendations for supporting individuals with Tramatic Brain Injuries and learning implecations.
